Fixing the Kobo ereader

Using the brilliant KOReader on your Kobo device? Occasionally you might encounter the following error:

kfmon: error checking /tmp/kfmon-ipc.ctl: stat: no such file or directory src/generator_c.c

This is “expected” behaviour as a result of the Kobo firmware being upgraded. This has happened to me at least twice over the the last 18 months. There don’t seem to be any notifications about these inbound firmware updates they get applied magically in the background, so the result is you pick up to read and instead encounter an error state.

Solution

Following the one click install worked well to effectively reinstall your device as if new, using the following command to extract zip directly onto the device:

unzip /Users/luke/Documents/KoboSetup/OCP-KOReader-v2025.10.zip -d /Volumes/KOBOeReader/

Previously when following this path I had to reinstall the syncthing plugin for koreader , but this time it had remembered this configuration.
